Chapter Thirteen

Lara replaced the remains of the stalks with fresh roses. Were roses suitable for a sister? She wasn’t sure, but no one would judge accept Bella, if she were able to see her own grave. The roses were expensive and would probably be eaten by the rabbits within hours, but it didn’t matter. It gave Lara the chance to buy something special for her sister, her only blood relative. Of course she would tell her parents about her feelings, and they would understand. They had always intended to contact Bella when their daughter had grown up. And they did try but Bella’s rejection was too raw. Why didn’t they take her too?

Lara had grown up in a respectable family who taught her the values of education, law, and order, and kindness to others. Most importantly, they gave her a stable family life. She had benefited from the upbringing they had given her after the terrible start she’d had with her blood mother and father. Not once had Lara felt any connection to the man and woman who had failed her. They had not cared about her or Bella as much as their drugs and alcohol. It was their fault that she and her sister were thrown into the last chance saloon of social services.

It had not been an easy decision for her parents to refuse any sort of contact between their adopted daughter and her sibling. There was a significant age gap. Bella was eight years older than Lara as their father had spent six years in prison between the two births. The two sisters were not close. The elder sister had no time for little Lara who contributed nothing to her hard existence. There was that one chance of a reunion, of course, but Bella rejected it. Lara could understand why Bella might feel angry about Lara coming to visit her just because the disadvantaged sister had done well at school. Bella’s formative years were spent amongst drugs, alcohol, and violence.

Lara would probably never know what Bella endured during those years before their parent’s overdose and death rescued her. Was Bella rescued though? No-one protected or guided her. If only she knew that Lara was here with her now even it was too late. Suddenly, a robin jumped onto the top of the gravestone. Lara reached out her hand, but it flew up onto a nearby branch. Time to go. After one last look at the flowers, she walked out of the church grounds noticing the robin was following her. She wondered if it was Bella.

Outside the grounds, she began walking in the direction of the sea.

‘What’s your game?’

She spun around to find a man’s angry face leering into hers. It was a face she didn’t recognise. Then he grabbed her shoulders and began shaking her. Too afraid to speak, she looked around for help but only traffic was passing. Was he going to hit her? He didn’t hit her, but he did slam her against the stone wall of the church grounds and continued to shout, his words spitting in her face.
